Sustainable Livelihood

CRDD supports diverse livelihood pathways while considering the interests and rights of youth, women and the marginalized among the rural communities.

Pastoral livestock production system is an important contributor to Kenya’s agricultural GDP. The contribution of the production system, however, has only recently been recognized thus lacks adequate facilitation to realize its full potential. According to the county integrated plans (CIDPs) of the various counties in the arid and semi-arid region of Kenya, 60-80 percent of the population subsists on pastoral production. However, due to historic marginalization, these vast areas of Kenya’s drylands lack investments.

CRDD supports diverse livelihood pathways while considering the interests and rights of youth, women and the marginalized among the rural communities.

Our areas of action:

  • Recognition and support for pastoralism
  • Sound management of land and rangeland resources promoted
  • Tenure security to land for pastoralist communities strengthened
  • Livestock value chains strengthened
  • The resilience of community livelihoods to climate-related hazards and risks enhanced
